A restaurant visitor asked why he was charged more than $10 for a bottle of still water at one of Sydney’s most exclusive dining venues.
The Reddit user explained that they had decided to “splurge a little” and have “a nice dinner for a special occasion” at chef Matt Moran’s Aria, an expensive waterfront restaurant located on the city’s Circular Quay overlooking the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge.
The bill came to $455 in total, but user EstebanJulioRamirez asked the price of one of the items he ordered.
“We don’t really go to these high-end restaurants often,” they said in a post on the Sydney Reddit page.
“I can understand the charge for sparkling gas, but is it normal to charge $10.50 for still water in restaurants at this price?”
A bottle of sparkling water is also $10.50.
Other Reddit users also chimed in to warn that charging so much for still bottled water was common in fine-dining restaurants.
“Unfortunately, fancy restaurants will always ask you if you want still or sparkling water,” said one user.
“Always ask for tap water (unless you want to pay for still/sparkling water).”
Another advised: “Since the receipt says it was bottled, I’m guessing it was a fancy imported water served in a glass bottle.”
“I got burned on this once, when asked with gas or no gas, I assumed the still would be free. Now I know how to tap.”
