Watermelon-gate: Strong price increases continue on everyday items in supermarkets, including watermelon

Australians will be hit by a further price hike, with the cost of watermelons reaching a whopping $34 at a major supermarket.

Whole melons sell for $34 each at Woolworths stores, while at Coles, you can save a couple of bucks buying an 8kg whole fruit for $28, averaging around $3.50/kg .

But it’s still quite a hike and might make you think twice about ordering a watermelon daiquiri or filling the fruit with vodka.

A spokesperson for Woolworths told NCA NewsWire that the price increase was due to weather conditions, supply and demand.

“We pay farmers the market price for their produce, which can vary throughout the year due to weather, seasonality, supply and demand,” they said.

“Currently, we are paying our suppliers much more for watermelons due to reduced supply in the market and constant bad weather in key growing regions.”

Watermelons are currently out of season, they explained, which is affecting availability across Australia.
