Costco has surprised shoppers by putting cheap caskets and urns up for sale in stores next to barbecues.

A shopper shared an image on social media after seeing the display at the North Lakes store near Brisbane.

“Appropriately, you can see this as a last minute impulse buy at the checkout,” the shopper captioned the image.

Founded in the US, the company is one of the world’s largest retailers, selling wholesale items at low prices to members who pay an annual fee.

The image sparked a flurry of comments, some amusing and others saying it was in “bad taste.”

“Economy class, the legroom sucks,” responded one commenter.

‘I did a double take when I saw them for sale. Not exactly what I expected,” added another.

‘Do you deliver or do you have to leave with him tied to the roof of your car?’ wrote a third.

Caskets purchased from funeral homes vary in price, but often cost several thousand dollars.

Costco’s caskets retail from $899.99, while an urn will set customers back $159.99 and their caskets range from $3099.99 to $1549.99.

The retailer has been selling the items since 2015 in Australia and for years in its US stores.

The display has been previously seen at Melbourne’s Ringwood store.
