Worker accidentally fills diesel tank with up to 40,000 liters of unleaded gasoline

A costly mistake by a worker at a petrol station in East Melbourne last week could result in a bill of nearly half a million dollars.

The Maroondah Leader reported that the worker accidentally filled up to 40,000 liters of unleaded fuel into a diesel tank at a Coles Express fuel station in Ringwood East last Thursday night.

The worker quickly realized the mistake he had made and made sure the pumps were quickly shut down.

No customers were affected by the bug, but it took until Saturday morning for the issue to be fixed.

Workers spent hours at the station emptying and cleaning the 40,000-litre tank.

Fuel tanks are routinely replenished once they reach 10,000 litres, meaning the unleaded petrol and diesel fuel remaining in the tank could have mixed.

But the extracted fuel will be refined so that it can be used again.

Drivers in Melbourne pay an average of $1.98 per liter when they go to fill up their vehicles with diesel, according to FuelPrice Australia.

The average price reached dizzying heights of $2.22 a liter at the end of July.
