Thousands are rushing to check their hot water systems after a plumbing company revealed what happens when they aren’t cleaned or properly serviced for long periods of time.
Service Today Australia shared the ‘disgusting’ TikTok video showing what lurks inside a ‘neglected’ rusty hot water system as a warning to its followers this week.
Water that sits inside dirty, unserviced hot water systems can negatively affect the pores in your skin, hair, and clothing as it passes through your shower, faucets, and washer.
Nathan, a plumbing expert for the company, told FEMAIL that you should check your hot water system every one to five years, depending on the model.

A shocking TikTok video shows what happens to hot water systems that don’t get service. In the clip posted by Service Today Australia, a buildup of minerals and rust can be seen inside, as the tank hadn’t been cleaned for “years.”
A number of key signs could also indicate if the system needs service, such as poor water flow, tank leaks, water temperature, and the age of the system.
“If your water has experienced extreme water discoloration, the unit is past recommended service and may require replacement,” said Nathan.
‘Hot water valves have a five-year replacement life before creating a safety issue.’

Nathan said the tank in the TikTok video was over 13 years old and claims the owner didn’t know when, if ever, it was last serviced. The all-important anode rod, which is inside the tank from the top, had also not been replaced (pictured: a new rod compared to a damaged rod)
Nathan said the tank in the TikTok video was over 13 years old and claims the owner didn’t know when, if ever, it was last serviced.
The all-important anode rod, which is inside the tank from the top, had also not been replaced.
‘The anode rod is placed inside the tank of the hot water system; It is made of magnesium or aluminum and, through an electrochemical process, it attracts limestone, iron and other mineral particles that are usually present in water”, explained Nathan.
“Essentially, the anode rod works by attracting the corrosion process (which would otherwise damage the tank) first.
‘In other words, you ‘sacrifice’ to extend the life of your water heater.’
The rod should be replaced every five years to prevent rust and deterioration of the hot water system.

“The anode rod is installed inside the hot water system reservoir,” Nathan said. The rod should be replaced every five years to prevent rust and deterioration of the hot water system.
Your hair and skin can also dry out over time due to the minerals in the water, which can block pores and cause acne.
Over time, you may also find that your skin requires moisture to stay hydrated.
Since then, the video has been viewed more than 257,000 times and received a flood of comments from other TikTok users.
‘Imagine the water pipes,’ wrote one person, another added: ‘That’s why you never fill the kettle from the hot water tap!’
Those who want to make sure their water is pure enough for showering can also purchase a shower filter.
