As reported by the herald sunA Shell Coles Express fuel station in the Melbourne suburb of Ringwood East has been forced to close after a fuel delivery truck driver accidentally filled an underground diesel tank with up to 40,000 liters of unleaded petrol.
A fuel station worker realized the mistake and turned off the station’s pumps before customers were affected by filling their diesel cars with unleaded gasoline.
Running a diesel car on gasoline can cause significant damage to the vehicle’s fuel system and engine, which can lead to total failure within minutes of starting it.
The incident led to the closure of the service station between Thursday night and Saturday morning, while fuel removal specialists worked to empty the unleaded gasoline from the underground diesel tank.
While the diesel tank is now clean and ready for refilling, the extracted gasoline and diesel fuel blend will be transported to Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery, where it will be further refined and reused.
