The long-awaited Toyota Corolla Cross will launch in Australia in October, with petrol or hybrid power across the range, and prices around $1000 cheaper than equivalent RAV4s.

Unveiled overseas two years ago, the new Corolla Cross sits between the Yaris Cross and RAV4 in Toyota’s lineup, and as a more practical alternative to the sportier C-HR.
There will be three model grades available, GX, GXL and Atmos, with the option of a 2.0-litre petrol engine with front-wheel drive or hybrid power with front or four-wheel drive.
All versions of the Corolla Cross are $500 to $1,500 less than equivalent RAV4 models. Measuring around 4,460mm long and 1,825mm wide, the Corolla Cross is around 140mm shorter and 30mm narrower than a RAV4.
Price-leading petrol variants are powered by a 2.0-litre non-turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 126 kW, nearly identical to the RAV4 and Corolla hatch/sedan, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. .
The Australian specification of the Corolla Cross Hybrid has not been announced, however it will use a 2.0-litre petrol engine (with 112kW alone) and electric motors of unknown power outputs.
Abroad, the power is 146kW. Front and all-wheel drive (with an electric motor driving the rear wheels) options are available in Australia.
Toyota’s website confirms that the base GX hybrid consumes 4.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in the city, or 4.6 l/100 km on the highway, about 0.3 l/100 km less than an equivalent RAV4.
Standard features on the Corolla Cross GX include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, cloth seats, power folding mirrors, six speakers and a full suite of advanced safety features.
Corolla Cross is set to debut its manufacturer’s next-generation infotainment system in a Toyota in Australia, with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, wireless updates and support for an expanded set of Toyota Connected Services features. .
The system runs on an 8.0-inch touchscreen on the GX, or a 10.5-inch touchscreen on the GXL and flagship Atmos. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is featured on the Atmos, a first for a Toyota in Australia.
New infotainment software and larger screens are expected to be included in updated versions of the Corolla hatch/sedan and RAV4 SUV before the end of the year.
