An American expat who moved to Australia was left confused after browsing the snack aisle at Coles.
Katy, who goes by the TikTok username @ameristralia, caught the attention of thousands online after admitting she had “no idea” what certain flavors of potato chips taste like.
In a now-viral video, he pointed to Kettle chips ‘Kakadu Plum’ and ‘Lemon Myrtle’, prompting a flood of comments from Australians.
“When you try to buy chips in Australia and you have no idea what any of the flavors mean,” Katy wrote in the video.

An American expat has become confused after exploring the snack options at Coles. In a TikTok video, Katy admitted she had “no idea” what certain flavors of potato chips taste like.
In a now-viral video, he pointed to Kettle chips ‘Kakadu Plum’ and ‘Lemon Myrtle’, prompting a flood of comments from Australians.
Katy moved to Queensland five months after first visiting Down Under and since then the video has been viewed more than 293,000 times.
In the comments, she claims to have quickly looked up flavor descriptions as she walked down the supermarket aisle, as the snack options were “completely new” to her.
Many were quick to clarify that the flavors are indigenous to Australia and taste ‘amazing’.
‘They are deadly delicious. If you want something really good try the green ant jam,” one person wrote, with another adding, “Anything with lemon myrtle is amazing.”
‘Tbf (to be fair), as an Australian I don’t know the flavors either. but you say “interesting enough to try” or “I don’t even want to try that”, added a third.
Others shared their favorite potato chip flavors and offered recommendations on what Katy should try.
Have you tried honey soy chicken? [or] Kettle-style chip? There’s a reason we’re obsessed,” one person asked, but Katy admitted the popular honey soy flavor didn’t appeal to her taste buds.
Another added: “The sweet chili and sour cream are amazing (I think Red Rock).”
“All you need to know is light and spicy and nothing more,” said a third.
“Our chips are divine, buy one of each,” admitted another.
Many were quick to clarify that the flavors are indigenous to Australia and taste ‘amazing’. ‘They are deadly delicious. If you want something really good try the green ant jam,” one person wrote, with another adding, “Anything with lemon myrtle is amazing.”
Some also called the expat and seemed offended after watching the short video.
‘Yes, we like flavors other than cheese and bacon. Another revelation from an American who is shocked that another country is, in fact, not the United States,” one person wrote.
Another added: “It means we still have taste buds and we’re not just relying on MSG and sugar.”
But Katy replied, ‘It’s interesting, I’m sure you’ll be intrigued by other flavors that [haven’t] seen before.’
